The extent of Galway’s homeless crisis was brought into sharp focus when an encampment of nine tents emerged in Renmore last weekend.

Shane Forde, a Councillor for Galway City East, described the encampment at the walking path from Lough Atalia Avenue leading to College Road as ‘illegal’.

Councillor Forde was contacted by concerned residents, and he in turn reported the matter to Galway City Council’s Parks Department and Community Wardens.

“Seven of the tents and their occupants have been moved and referred to the homeless service within Galway City Council,” said Councillor Forde, who praise the “prompt response” of City Hall staff.

“Neighbours in the area have legitimate safety and environmental concerns about the encampments, which I have brought to the attention of the City Council,” he said.

Councillor Forde said one tent that can sleep six people remained on the grounds of Rosedale school – and it was matter for the school, not the Council, to deal with.

“We cannot allow illegal encampments like this to take place anywhere in the city. We must work with everyone to make sure people receive the support and shelter they require as a basic human right,” added Cllr Forde.
