GALWAY United are still right in the mix for the First Division title, but not without making life tough for themselves in Turners Cross last Friday night when they had to play 75 minutes of the game with 10 men in front of what is believed to have been a First Division record crown of 6,393 people.
John Caulfield’s side were utterly dominant in the opening 15 minutes, and looked in good shape to repeat the win they recorded Leeside back in March. Ed McCarthy was the goal-scoring hero that day, but he turned villain on Friday night, when a flick of his boot that caught the rampaging Cian Bargary who was leading a coutner-attack, and resulted in a straight card from referee Sean Grant.
The foul took place inside the Cork City half, and both Conor O’Keeffe and Conor McCormack were goal side, so Grant must have decided it was violent conduct from the United man, rather than a professional foul.
It was the third time in four visits that United have had a man sent off in Turners Cross, with McCarthy following in the footsteps of Wilson Waweru back in March, and Stephen Walsh last season, and it meant that United had to redraw a game plan that had been working a treat up until then.
