A throng of excited smallies clutching teddies in all manner of conditions will descend on University of Galway today (Thursday) and tomorrow between 10am-2pm in a welcome return of the beloved Teddy Bear Hospital.
An estimated 1,200 schoolchildren from Junior and Senior Infants in schools across the city and surrounding areas such as Claregalway, Barna and Oranmore have registered to take part in the event at the Bailey Allen Hall on the Newcastle campus, which is designed to make children feel more comfortable in a medical environment.
It also gives a unique insight to the 200 healthcare students who have volunteered to be involved about dealing with young patients and how to improve their communications skills.
The kids begin their visit with a consultation with a teddy bear doctor. They then attend the ‘X-ray department’ where they will see an x-ray of teddy’s bones. In the case of gaping wounds, pupils can bring teddy to visit the ‘surgery’ and watch as cuts are stitched up.
The appointment finishes with a visit to the ‘pharmacy’ where treats will be dispensed to help teddy’s recovery before a quick bounce on one of the bouncy castles.
