Taibhdhearc takes to the road

An Taibhdhearc is bringing creativity and collaboration into classrooms across Galway this November with Seó Linn – a new theatre project created in partnership with local schools.

From November 3 to 21, theatre-makers Neasa Ní Chuanaigh and Cillian Ó Donnachadha will tour primary schools across the city and Conamara, guiding students through the process of creating a play in a day.

Each class from first to sixth will have the opportunity to partake in a drama workshop, exploring their own short scene.

And at the end of the day, the whole school will come together to share the six scenes, in a complete performance inspired by the legendary story of Scáthach.

Scáthach is the mighty Scottish warrior who trained Cú Chulainn. She is a fearsome figure, but in the end, she discovers that rumours can be more powerful than weapons, and that truth and bravery can come in all shapes and sizes.

This annual community partnership project from An Taibhdhearc brings professional artists into schools, creating a fun, fast-paced, and inclusive experience in Irish for children.

Designed in collaboration with primary school teachers teaching through Irish, Seó Linn is tailored to be age-appropriate, creative, and engaging for every student. Those less comfortable performing will also have opportunities to contribute behind the scenes, ensuring a role for everyone.

Artistic Director of An Taibhdhearc Muireann Kelly explained that, each year, the company produces a new piece of work in the community.

“Our focus this year was to engage with, inspire, and learn from the next generation of young Irish speakers,” she said.

“We are excited to be working with two Galway-based artists, developing this production so that it can tour schools in Galway city and the Conamara Gaeltacht, with support from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, and Ealaín na Gaeltachta.

“Seó Linn offers a unique opportunity for young people to explore their creativity, build confidence, and engage with the Irish language in a fun, supportive environment.

“Through this project, An Taibhdhearc continues its commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists while strengthening connections with communities across Galway city and Conamara,” she added.

One of the theatre-makers involved is local artist Neasa Ní Chuanaigh.

“As an artist from An Spidéal I’m excited to be bringing Seó Linn to Galway city and county, but especially to Conamara schools,” she said.

Expressions of interest from schools wishing to take part can be sent to e.nichonchuir@antaibhdhearc.ie

There will not be any charge or booking fee – bookings will be taken purely on a first come first serve basis.
