Galway Bay fm newsroom – The sunshine has brought out large crowds to the Square in Ballinasloe as the nine day great October Fair and Festival gets underway

80 thousand people are expected in Ballinasloe over the next nine days injecting an estimated 8 million euro into the local economy

The equine events are being held this weekend and next weekend when traffic is expected to be at its heaviest

Continued drop in unemployment across Galway during May

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There was a continued drop in unemployment across Galway during May.

Drops were recorded in every area of the county.

The number of people unemployed across Galway last month was 8,379 – a drop of 573 when compared to April.

In the city centre, there are 4,168 people on the live register, a decrease of 290.

In Ballinasloe, the figure dropped by 79 – now standing at 996.

There was a drop of 65 in the unemployment figure for Tuam, which now stands at 1,257.

There are 868 people out of work in Loughrea, a drop of 59 on the April figure.

In Gort live register figures dropped from 661 to 589 month-on-month.

Meanwhile, in Clifden there are 501 poeple out of work, representing a drop of eight since April.

Gardaí record 84% increase in sale or supply of drugs in Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There has been an 84% increase in the sale or supply of drugs across Galway city so far this year.

Figures compiled by An Garda Síochána reveal 59 such offences were recorded from January to the end of May.

Simple possession offences in the Galway city area recorded a 66% increase in the period with 121 recorded in the year to date.

Gardaí seized cocaine valued at over 350 thousand euro in the period.

This next highest seizure type concerned cannabis with a total value of over 140 thousand euro.

Heroin valued at over two thousand euro was seized by Gardaí in the year to date.

Outside of drugs, domestic incidents also recorded a significant increase at 32%, with 40 such offences recorded in the period.

The garda report revealed a drop in all forms of property crime, with burglary dropping by over 50%.

There was also a drop in the volume of public order offences with 180 recorded so far this year compared to 207 in the same period last year.

Public webinar to discuss County Development Plan

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – A public webinar on the new County Development Plan will be hosted online tomorrow evening.

The Galway Public Participation Network and Gort-Kinvara Councillor Geraldine Donohue are organising the event to give residents in the county the chance to familiarise themselves with the draft development plan.

It comes as the public consultation process is ongoing for the new plan which runs until 2028.

Written submissions and observations on the draft plan can be submitted to the County Council until 30 July.

The event will take place on Zoom and the meeting link available on Councillor Donohue’s Facebook page.

She says the webinar presents a great chance for people to ask county officials questions about the project.
