Despite a shortage of designated venues and mounting economic pressure post-pandemic, Galway’s nightlife has been propped up over the last year by recurring music nights that facilitate original acts. One such event is Blush, a club night that has been taking place on Thursday nights in the Róisín Dubh since September of last year. Incorporating a wide range of genres including house, garage and hip-hop, Blush distinguishes itself as a champion of inclusion and representation in electronic music – the core philosophy of the night is built around platforming women, LGBTQ+ and non-binary artists.
On Thursday, February 16, Blush is set to host some of the most exciting, emerging DJs and producers in Ireland over two floors in the Róisín.
Included on the bill are Small Crab, Rhyzine, Julia Louise Knifefist, Lychee, Hannah Hession, DJ Egg, Kelsey, Supergross, Sophie, Kirsty and Lolz – the last of whom, Laura O’Connell, is behind the organisation of Blush.
“I caught Julia Louise Knifefist at Up in the Air festival last year and he was really sick – a kind of industrial, rap and electronic thing that’s hard to define, alongside a really energetic lightshow,” Laura recalls.
“I’ve never actually seen Small Crab, Rhyzine or Lychee DJ but I know they’ll be really good. Small Crab just had her first release there last year and I’m really excited to see all of them. Rhyzine runs Honeypot in Dublin which is a queer club night for women so it’ll be good to have her on the bill and I’ve heard really good things about her. I’m hyped to go back-to-back with Hannah [Hession] as well.
