St Michael’s 1-8
Claregalway 1-5
THE relatively small crowd who witnessed this dreary opening senior football championship clash would be forgiven for wishing that it received a bout of resuscitation to breathe a bit of life into the action on an evening St Michael’s emerged as deserving winners.
The city side largely had the upper hand over Claregalway at Tuam Stadium as they secured the vital late scores to keep daylight between them in a gruelling encounter that had little spark to it.
In fact, it was a late interception from centre back Brian Madden that effectively killed off any hopes Claregalway had of sneaking a late goal which is what they required to earn a share of the spoils in the late summer sunshine.
But it was a game that never really got off the starting blocks with a more undisciplined St Michael’s, who received five yellow and one black card from referee Austin O’Connell, scoring a first half goal to give them a four point half-time lead and then getting a couple of late scores to leave them at arm’s length from Claregalway.
