Willie Ward’s side made a bright start and led 2-9 to 0-2 at the interval, with Louise Ward and Aisling Madden finding the net during the opening half. Kate Slevin and Katie Brogan were Claregalway’s only scorers before the break.
There was no sign of Kilkerrin Clonberne easing off in the second half as the reigning county champions cruised to a 24-point victory. Remarkably, they have racked up an impressive 12-95 during this year’s club championship, while conceding just 0-11.
The Galway champions can now look forward to representing the county in Connacht, where they will face the Leitrim champions as they aim to secure a ninth successive provincial title. Kilkerrin Clonberne will also have their sights set on winning a sixth All-Ireland title in-a-row.
Willie Ward has plenty of inter-county experience at his disposal, with Louise and Nicola Ward, sisters Eva, Lynsey and Hannah Noone, Olivia, Niamh and Siobhan Divilly, along with Ailish Morrissey and Aisling Madden all key members of the squad.
This was Claregalway’s tenth county final defeat to Kilkerrin Clonberne in the last 12 years, and they will understandably be disappointed to have fallen short once again. However, they can take some consolation from the fact that they are coming up against arguably the greatest ladies club football team of all time.
