Six Galway towns and villages are to share funding of €650,000 under the latest round of the state’s renewal scheme.
The awards range from €250,000 for Ballinasloe down to just under €50,000 for Athenry, with Portumna, An Spidéal, Tuam and Casla also included.
Ballinasloe Enterprise Centre and BACD will use the funding to further develop the Pulse Hub, ensuring a new future for the vacant former Bank Chambers building on Society Street.
Portumna and Tuam will each receive €100,000 to upgrade and enhance shop fronts and street facades.
An Spidéal will receive the same amount for its street enhancement scheme, to upgrade and enhance shopfronts and street facades and install outdoor picnic benches to build on the development of public outdoor dining and recreation spaces.
Casla will receive €50,000 for a feasibility study to examine the development of a Low Carbon Sustainable Centre of Excellence in the Connemara village.
And Athenry will receive just €50 less than that towards a pre-planning assessment, and detailed design package for the proposed Community Hub.
Nationally, the main scheme saw 75 projects approved for total funding of €17m, while the Streetscape Enhancement Measure saw 26 projects share €2.6m – and 33 projects were approved for a combined €1.56m under the Project Development Measure.
Details of the latest tranche of funding were announced this week by Minister Heather Humphreys at the Department of Rural & Community Development – and there was an immediate welcome for the inclusion of six Galway projects.
Senator Aisling Dolan said she was particularly delighted that the Ballinasloe Enterprise Centre and BACD had been included.
