Ultan Pringle’s play, Boyfriends, which follows a three-month affair between two anonymous men as it charts the ups and downs of a modern ‘situationship’, will be in Druid’s Mick Lally Theatre next week.

Boyfriends, from young Dublin-based arts collective, LemonSoap Productions, is visiting Galway on Wednesday and Thursday, October 22 and 23, as part of an eight-venue national tour.

After a chance meeting in The George nightclub, the main characters in Boyfriends initially ghost each other. Then they make up and foster a dog, and ultimately they end up grappling with what it means to actually be sorta-kinda-maybe in a proper, intimate relationship with one another.

As they explore what this might mean, they work their way through time, sex, Madonna songs, nightclubs, period dramas and calorie-counting. Meanwhile, the play asks the age-old question: what is romance anyway?

Boyfriends seeks to explore modern love, grief, existentialism and the heart-breaking joy of really getting to know someone, according to its author, Donegal playwright Ultan Pringle.

He describes the piece as being about “connection and companionship, and I think we’re at a time in our world where we’re all a little bit searching for togetherness. And there’s a remote controlled pug dog made of old socks – so, what’s not to love?”.

Ultan features in the two-hander alongside Emmanuel Okoye, and it’s directed by Joy Nesbitt.

Boyfriends was described by the Irish Times and the Irish Independent as “smart”, with the Times calling it ‘raw and above all, hilarious . . .’ and the Independent praising it as ‘funny and heartfelt’.

Hailed as ‘one of the best, if not the best, new plays of 2024’ by The Arts Review, The Reviews Hub stated it was ‘not to be missed’ .

Boyfriends, which is for audiences of 16+, includes mentions of disordered eating, suicidal ideation and bereavement.. The 80-minute show is at Druid next Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm nightly.

Tickets are €20/€18, available from the box office, phone 091 568660, and online at www.druid.ie.
