Sitting Councillor will lose out for final seat

Four sitting Councillors are in a battle for the final three seats in Galway City West, tallies suggest – with the Greens struggling to hold.

Donal Lyons (Ind) will top the poll for the sixth time in a row, with 16.2% of first preferences according to a 97% tally of the boxes opened (one box was not tallied).

Clodagh Higgins (FG) on 12.5% and John Connolly (FF) on 10.3% are expected to hold.

Alan Curran (Soc Dem) has polled well, taking in almost 10% of first preferences, and will get elected based on these tallies.

Then it’s a three-way battle between Fianna Fáil’s Peter Keane, who on 9% is in a stronger position than Labour’s Niall McNelis (7.8%) and Green Party Niall Murphy (7.4%).

Transfers will be key as the official count gets underway in Westside to determine the six seats.
