Gardaí, Galway Cat Rescue volunteers, members of the public, and Glenina Veterinary Clinic came to the rescue of a stricken seal washed-up in Salthill last week.

Members of Galway Cat Rescue, returning from a cat-trapping case last Wednesday, were diverted to the Promenade at Grattan Beach in Salthill following reports of a distressed seal washed up.

When they arrived, they found a pup crossing the main road, and although it seemed unharmed apart from a few abrasions it was distressed and a traffic hazard.

With the help of three Gardaí from Salthill Garda Station, the volunteers wrapped the seal into a picnic blanket supplied by a passer-by and loaded it into the back of the Garda van.

The seal was firstly brought to the Garda station, until an appropriate container was found to put her in. And then she was transported to Glenina Vet Clinic where vet Colm McGovern fed her with a tube.

On Thursday, the seal was transported to Seal Rescue Ireland (SRI) in County Wexford.
