Scene of fatal city lift accident sealed off for HSA investigation
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The scene of a fatal lift accident in the city remains sealed off this morning to facilitate an examination by Health and Safety Authority officers.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out on the body of the three-year-old boy who died in the lift shaft at the social welfare office at Hynes Building on Augustine Street yesterday.
Solomon Soremekun was with his mother and at least two other siblings at the building at around 3p.m.
Two separate investigations have been launched by the Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority – into how the boy could have gained access to the lift shaft.
Gardai investigations are ongoing following a serious road traffic collision outside Craughwell this afternoon.
Emergency services attended the scene of the single-vehicle collision on the N6 on the Galway side of Craughwell this afternoon at approximately 3pm.
A male motorcyclist was seriously injured and removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway.
Investigations are ongoing.

Ireland must introduce a specific mental health strategy to address the silent pandemic that is casting a shadow across the farming community in rural Ireland.
That was the message delivered by Midlands-North-West MEP Maria Walsh, when she hosted an event in Brussels this week with her EPP colleagues.
As part of EU Mental Health Week, the Fine Gael MEP hosted the event with the Belgian MEP, focussing on mental health and suicide prevention within the farming community.
As part of the event, As part of the event, MEP Walsh invited representatives from UCD’s School of Agriculture and Food Science, and from the School of Psychology, to share their research and they highlighted the frightening reality that 25% of Irish farmers are at risk of suicide.
Speaking to Galway Bay FM News this afternoon, MEP Walsh said that it was a terrifying statistic.

Clifden RNLI appeals for people to be careful out at sea following two callouts in 24 hours
Clifden RNLI is advising people to be careful when out on the sea this weekend and throughout the summer.
Volunteer Crews were called out twice in the last 24 hours.
First to tow a broken-down boat with two people on board to safety yesterday evening and again at midnight to a medivac from Inishbofin.
At 6.45pm. Clifden’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat was tasked by Malin Head Coast Guard to assist a boat that had broken down.
The crew launched Joyce King in beautiful sunny conditions, helmed by David Barry with crew James Mullen, Joseph Acton and Brian Ward.
They were assisted in launching by Neil Gallery and John Brendan Mannion on shore.
The second call-out came at midnight,
Clifden’s all-weather lifeboat St Christopher was tasked to medivac an injured person from Inishbofin.
The casualty had sustained a head injury from a fall.
The lifeboat slipped her moorings under the command of James Mullen, (Coxswain), with John Mullen, Joseph Acton, Dan Whelan and Neil Gallery as crew.
Lifeboat Operations Manager John Brittain has this advice for everyone who is planning on using the water this weekend.
