Arts Week with Judy Murphy
Famed for his satire and humour, US author David Sedaris will be in the city’s Town Hall Theatre on Friday September 19, and tickets for his show are now on sale.
Sedaris is coming to Galway as part of a four-venue tour which will also see him visit the Cork Opera House, Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and Belfast’s Ulster Hall.
Renowned for his keen sense of observation, Sedaris’s essays and short stories cover topics that range from his hatred of people taking selfies in public to his horror at artificial intelligence, not to mention his torment at the demise of old-fashioned manners. His bestselling books include Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, and Calypso. More than16 million copies of his books have been and they have been translated into 32 languages.
His essays features regularly The New Yorker and have been included in The Best American Essays, while his most recent book, Happy-Go-Lucky, debuted at number one on The New York Times bestseller list.
Sedaris and his sister, Amy Sedaris, collaborating under the name The Talent Family, have also written half-a-dozen plays, including One Woman Shoe, which received an Obie Award.
He has also been nominated for five Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album, while his other accolades include the Terry Southern Prize for Humor, Thurber Prize for American Humor, Jonathan Swift International Literature Prize for Satire and Humor, Time 2001 Humorist of the Year Award, as well as the Medal for Spoken Language from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Since 2011, he has created a regular series of live recordings for BBC Radio 4, entitled Meet David Sedaris.
An Evening with David Sedaris, which is for over-18s, will be followed by a Q&A Session.
It starts at 7.30pm, with doors opening at 6pm, to facilitate pre-show signing of his books. He will also sign books afterwards.
Tickets for An Evening With David Sedaris, which is being presented by Aiken Promotions, are available at tht.ie, 091-569777 or at the venue box office and cost €36.05, plus booking fee.
