Sarsfields on track for third title in a row

Mullagh 0-7

Sarsfields took another step towards a first county senior camogie three-in-a-row on Sunday as they got a hold of this semi-final to deliver a controlled display and book a final appearance against Oranmore/Maree or Ardrahan in two weeks.

With the time of year, a stop-start contest was expected and both sets of defenders delivered solid performances. However, the reigning All-Ireland champions had better options at the other end to create the difference between the sides, including sprinkles of magic from Orlaith McGrath, who brightened up the afternoon with four points from play including two excellent wing strikes that would have impressed on a summer evening.

Aoife Donohue was Mullagh’s key threat and did tally in the early stages, but she had her hands full with Sarsfields marking supremo Aoibhe Deeley. The pair covered so much ground over the hour that it was impossible to determine their respective official positions.

Mullagh did enjoy the better of exchanges in the opening five minutes but failed to trouble the umpires. A couple of wides came along with ball falling directly to centre-back Maria Cooney, who could drop back thanks to Clodagh McGrath’s positioning as a holding midfielder.

Sarsfields weren’t finding it easy to unlock their opponents’ defence with Ciara Donohue keeping tight on Siobhan McGrath, but the goalscorer in the All-Ireland final is a difficult proposition and she managed to draw fouls as well as contributing from the resulting frees.
