Salthill-Knocknacarra 3-13
St Fursey’s 1-3
Ivan Smyth at Tuam Stadium
Salthill/Knocknacarra secured their club’s first ever Junior A LGFA title as they atoned for final defeats in 2020 and last year.
Donal O’Connell’s charges never trailed as they looked the more menacing side throughout with a quickfire 1-1 from Daisy O’Connell midway through the opening half helping Salthill/Knocknacarra surge clear.
Despite starting the quicker of the two sides, Salthill/Knocknacarra had been reeled in and led by just a point, 1-3 to 1-2 after 18 minutes. However, O’Connell’s goal helped to steady the ship for the city side, with St Fursey’s subsequently reduced to 13 players before the half ended with Leah Flynn and Aoife Molloy both sin binned.
The Headford side continued to battle, but Salthill/Knocknacarra’s determination to rectify previous final defeats ensured that they would not be beaten. In a statistic which tells the tale of this encounter, Salthill/Knocknacarra kicked all 16 of their scores from play in comparison to just one from St Fursey’s.
The winners possessed a forward unit with the ability to take their own scores while at the same time continuously finding the player in the best position. Throw in a formidable midfield partnership of Siobhan Divilly and Ailbhe Finnerty alongside a teak-tough defence, and Salthill/Knocknacarra never appeared in danger of another final defeat.
