The courageous crew of the renowned Connemara gleoiteog, sailing boat named An Sruthan Bui, have returned safely to Lettermullen after completing their extraordinary 220 km journey around the rocky seas and lakes of the greater Connemara region.
The triumphant arrival of the three sailors was met with a warm welcome and a grand celebration at Tigh Mhichael Jack near Bealadangan last Saturday night.
The remarkable achievement of the sailors was made even more significant by the efforts of a dedicated group of supporters who successfully raised a total of €14,320 for two local charities, Tigh Nan Dooley, a special school for children based in An Ceathru Rua (€11,675) and Connemara Defib Network (€2,645).
The unwavering support from the local community in the South Connemara Gaeltacht truly showcased the spirit of volunteerism and community solidarity.
The funds were presented to the two charities in the form of a symbolic oversized cheque from AIB bank, adding a touch of excitement to the already joyous occasion.
Representatives from Tigh Nan Dooley and Connemara Defib Network were full of gratitude as they received the generous donations.
Mairtin Tom Sheanin, the MC for the event, played a pivotal role in organizing the night’s festivities.
He made a point of expressing his heartfelt appreciation to the various groups and individuals who contributed to the success of the historic journey.
Special mention was given to Padraig “Ned” Ó Cualain, Clynach, An Ceathru Rua, Michael Loftus, Furnish and Coilin Hernon Galway all of whom provided support, made transport available for the sailing boat when needed.
Additionally, Mairtin thanked the Connacht Tribune, TG4 and Raidio na Gaeltachta for their extensive coverage of the event, which significantly contributed to its overall success.
The boat journey not only showcased the breathtaking beauty of the Connemara region but also highlighted the capacity of individuals and communities to come together for the greater good.
