Wexford FC 0
Galway United 4
HISTORY was made on Friday night as an utterly dominant Galway United made it eight wins on the spin for the first time in the club’s history to swat away the challenge of Wexford FC on a beach of a pitch at Ferrycarrig Park.
John Caulfield’s side are now nine points clear at the top of the table, and while that would be cut to seven if Waterford win their game in hand against Treaty United later this month, the First Division title is United’s to lose, even with 28 games remaining in the season.
They host Bray Wanderers this Friday night where a win would see them complete the first series of games by beating every other team in the division, and when you consider they will follow that up with ties against Kerry (away), Cobh (home), and Longford (away), they could be as good as out of sight before welcoming Waterford to Eamonn Deacy Park on the first Friday in May.
Of course, you have to take it one game at as time, and it would be both foolish and dangerous to get carried away with not even one quarter of the season gone, but it is not too much of a stretch to say that the Tribesmen have yet to play to their full potential, and that has to be a frightening thought for the rest of the sides in the league.
They are still some way off an actual league record: club statistician Julian Canny has pointed out that Limerick won their first 12 games in the 2016 First Division on their way to capturing the title by a staggering 23 points; while Bohemians went three games better when winning their first 15 games all the way back in the 1923 season.
