The sensational Oh Boland play a free show in the city’s Róisín Dubh next Wednesday, February 14. Lead singer Niall Murphy writes raucous, witty songs, fronting a three-piece that’s completed by Éanna MacDonnchadha (bass) and Simon McDonagh (drums and vocals).
Their lively songs include Take Me Back to Mutton Island, straight from the heart of Galway City and with a great hook. The band opened for The Undertones in the Róisín last year, and there’s an affinity between the two bands. Punk and pop music are infused in the Oh Boland sound and their song Where’s the Beach? is as catchy a number as Teenage Kicks.
Where’s the Beach? can be heard on the Ho! EP, available as a free download on Bandcamp. It was recorded in Galway Rehearsal Studios by Brian Kelly, the man behind the excellent So Cow project.
Brian and Niall Murphy are also members of Half Forward Line, who write garage-pop gems and share a fondness for fuzzy guitar sounds with Oh Boland and So Cow.
A Wilful Want is a highlight from the EP and shows that beneath the distortion, Niall has a real ear for a memorable chorus. Simon and Éanna provide a tight rhythm section that keeps the whole thing tapping along.
Oh Boland are at the forefront of the Galway music scene and this gig will be a raucous way to spend Valentine’s.
