Kilkenny 5-20
Galway 3-20
THE jury is out on Galway’s capacity to pick up the pieces after suffering a second consecutive defeat in the revamped Leinster U20 hurling championship at O’Connor Park, Tullamore on Saturday.
In a carbon copy of their opening round-robin loss to Dublin the previous weekend, Galway started brightly and jumped into a significant lead, only for the wheels to come off in the second-half of a high-scoring encounter.
At least there were some mitigating factors this time, notably a harsh refereeing call which helped to drag Kilkenny back into the contest, and the loss of midfielder Tiernan Killeen to injury before half-time.
Galway had recovered smartly from the concession of an early Billy Drennan goal as they built up a 1-10 to 1-3 lead after 22 minutes. Kilkenny were feeling the strain as the reshuffled Tribesmen stitched together some impressive scores.
With four changes in personnel, and a couple of positional switches as well, Galway had shaken things up after their defeat to Dublin. Some reputations had to be retrieved, and Brian Hanley’s charges were in a determined mood from the off.
