Druid’s production of Richard III, in association with the Abbey Theatre and directed by Garry Hynes, will have its premiere in Galway at the Town Hall Theatre next month before being staged at the Abbey in October as part of Dublin Theatre Festival.
The case includes a host of familiar Druid faces including Aaron Monaghan in the title role, as well as Marie Mullen, Marty Rea, Peter Daly, Rory Nolan, Seán McGinley, Garrett Lombard, Ingrid Craigie and Jane Brennan. New to the company are Siobhán Cullen (who featured in Crestfall last year), Zara Devlin and Frank Blake.
This play, about one of the great villains in English history, is a chilling and darkly comic story of power and ambition.
This new production sees Druid continue its exploration of Shakespeare’s Kings with the same creative team and members of the Druid Ensemble who worked on the critically acclaimed DruidShakespeare. That production, which had been adapted by Mark O’Rowe who isn’t involved this time, comprised Richard II, Henry IV (Pts. 1 and 2) and Henry V. The design was by Francis O’Connor with lighting design by James F. Ingalls sound design by Gregory Clarke and music by Conor Linehan. David Bolger is Movement Director and Doreen McKenna is Co-Costume Designer. Thomas Conway is the Dramaturg while Maureen Hughes was Casting Consultant for the production.
