Galway Bay fm newsroom – A public engagement strategy is to be drawn up to determine the level of support for midwifery led care across the west / north west hospital group.
The director of midwifery services, who will take up the post this Summer, will be responsible for co-ordinating the strategy.
Regional opposition TDs have claimed the review will lead to downgrading of services and possibly unit closures such as the unit in Portiuncula Hospital
The board of the west/north west hospitals group has welcomed a discussion on different service models including midwife led units co-located with existing obstetric units.
A director of midwifery services will be responsible for co-ordinating a public engagement strategy which will shape the future development of services.
A full stakeholder consultation with existing maternity hospital staff across the group will also take place as well as a review of the maternity workforce in line with current standards.
No decision has been made about the reconfiguration of services and there are no planned closures of maternity services.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Tourism Minister believes Roderic O’Gorman has correctly negotiated the mother and baby home redress scheme.
Catherine Martin’s comments follow harsh criticism from the opposition on the scheme.
40 percent of survivors have been excluded from the scheme, as they spent less than six months in mother and baby homes.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has told the Dáil that he remains a supporter of the Galway City Ring Road.
It’s as An Bord Pleanala is to reconsider an application for the Galway Ring Road, after permission was quashed on environmental grounds.
The Taoiseach was asked by Deputy Ciaran Cannon about delays to double-tracking train services between Athenry and Oranmore.
Deputy Cannon said he understood a long-awaited feasibility study has somehow now been attached to an all-island rail review.
Leo Varadkar said that’s not something he agrees with.
Councillor organises cross border information clinic in Castledaly for HSE waiting list patients
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gort-Kinvara area councillor Geraldine Donohue has organised an information clinic for today for people who are on the HSE Waiting List and looking for faster treatment or surgery in Northern Ireland.
The Independent councillor is calling it a Cross Broder Clinic as it will be attended by representatives from Kingsbridge Hospital Belfast
The information clinic is being held at St Thomas GAA Club in Castledaly in Loughrea today from 9.30am to 4.30pm
