Protest group gathers in Eyre Square to coincide with Taoiseach’s visit

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A group of up to 20 protestors have gathered in Eyre Square where the Taoiseach will shortly officiate at the opening of the Christmas continental market (6pm)

They say they are demonstrating against government policy and austerity.

Enda Kenny has travelled from Loughrea where he earlier officiated at the opening of an intreo employment hub.

This evening’s city ceremony kicked off at 5.30 with a carnival style street parade.

The Taoiseach will also turn on the city’s christmas lights as part of the event.

Local TD claims HSE are “law unto themselves”

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A local TD is claiming that the HSE are a “law unto themselves”.

Michael Fitzmaurice was responding to comments by a spokesperson for the Consumer Association of Ireland that TDs seem forget about their local consituencies once they’re elected.

However, Roscommon/Galway Deputy Fitzmaurice argues that while TDs don’t always get it right, sometimes it’s out of their hands.

Speaking to Galway Talks, he claims the health service has taken the power away from the politician.

Minister Anne Rabbitte says “everything on the table” regarding budget measures

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Minister Anne Rabbitte has given an assurance that “everything is on the table” when it comes to measures being examined for the upcoming budget.

Speaking to Galway Talks, she said the Government is looking at absolutely everything, with a focus on the “squeezed middle” and the most vunerable.

She also noted that in her own constituency of Galway East, there’s a huge reliance on the car due to lack of public transport, as well as vehicles for farming.

Galway East Fianna Fail Minister Rabbitte says she knows many people are in urgent need of help.

Threefold increase in COVID patients at UHG over past month

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There’s been a threefold increase in the number of COVID patients at UHG over the past month.

There are currently 55 patients with the virus at the city hospital – compared to 17 patients on June 3rd.

It comes as 885 people are in hospital with Covid 19 , an increase of 59 since yesterday.

Taoiseach Michael Martin says the roll out of a fourth round of Covid vaccines would take place in the autumn.

Monaghan GP Illona Duffy says people shouldn’t rely on just one antigen test to establish if they have the virus.
