President to attend opening of Siobhán McKenna Archive to the public

Galway Bay fm newsroom – President Michael D Higgins is to attend the official opening of the Siobhán McKenna Archive to the general public.

Sioban McKenna was an internationally renowned actress and director that lived and studied in Galway in the 1940’s

In 1956 she was the first Irish actor to win a Tony Award and was a noted human rights campaigner throughout her career.

Following her return to Ireland in the 1960’s, she continued to act and direct until her death in 1986.

A collection of 55 boxes of papers and audio visual material on Siobhán McKenna’s life was donated to NUI Galway by her son, friends and a former manager.

Next week’s launch of the archive will feature a day of celebration of McKenna’s career with member’s of the McKenna family and notable figures from the Irish Theatre industry in attendance at the O’Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance in NUIG.

Tuam stadium secures almost 90 thousand euro for ongoing upgrade works

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Tuam Stadium is to receive almost 90 thousand euro for ongoing works in upgrading the facilities.

The funds have been awarded as part of the final set of allocations under the 2018 round of the Sports Capital Programme.

The grants total over €2.5 million with 15 regional sports projects benefiting nationwide.

To be considered of regional importance the project must serve a large population or provide facilities that will assist athletes to train or compete at the highest level.

Galway East TD and Minister for Rural Affairs Seán Canney says the grants are vital in order to provide the best facilities possible to host intercounty matches.

European Youth Parliament to gather in Galway

The European Youth Parliament will gather in Galway this weekend for its Connacht-Ulster session.

Young people from across the North-West will discuss the protection of the future of the EU while dealing with issues like globalisation and the rise of radical nationalism.

St Joseph’s Patrician College will host the three-day educational event and Tim Hayes, Political Reporter from the European Commission Representation in Ireland will speak at the opening ceremony.

Galway Chamber joins call for greater government investment in regional airports

Galway Chamber of Commerce has joined other regional business leaders in calling for greater government support for regional airports.

Representatives of the western and midwest business community met with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar this week to highlight the importance of international connectivity via regional airports in order to achieve regional economic growth.

Presidents of Galway, Limerick, Ennis and Shannon Chambers together with the Limerick Chamber Chief Economist and CEO gathered at Government Buildings to discuss the findings of the recently published Copenhagen Economics report, against the backdrop of Brexit.

The report points to the impact that strategic business routes can have on regional economic growth.
