President of Galway Trades Council selected as Labour Party Candidate for Galway East

The President of Galway Trades Council has been selected as the Labour Party Candidate for Galway East.

Marian Spelman was selected at a convention in Clarinbridge this week chaired by Councillor Niall McNelis.

Marian was born in Oranmore and grew up in Clarinbridge from the age of 6.

After 10 years of working as a Registered Nurse in Intellectual Disabilities, Marian studied for a degree in Politics, Sociology and English followed by a Masters in Journalism.

Marian is involved in the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation and also sits as the President of the Trades Council in Galway.

She now runs a Day Service for people with intellectual disabilities and autism with the Brothers of Charity in Clarinbridge.

Marian will stand as Galway West Labour Party Candidate in the next general election.

European Youth Parliament to gather in Galway

The European Youth Parliament will gather in Galway this weekend for its Connacht-Ulster session.

Young people from across the North-West will discuss the protection of the future of the EU while dealing with issues like globalisation and the rise of radical nationalism.

St Joseph’s Patrician College will host the three-day educational event and Tim Hayes, Political Reporter from the European Commission Representation in Ireland will speak at the opening ceremony.

Galway Chamber joins call for greater government investment in regional airports

Galway Chamber of Commerce has joined other regional business leaders in calling for greater government support for regional airports.

Representatives of the western and midwest business community met with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar this week to highlight the importance of international connectivity via regional airports in order to achieve regional economic growth.

Presidents of Galway, Limerick, Ennis and Shannon Chambers together with the Limerick Chamber Chief Economist and CEO gathered at Government Buildings to discuss the findings of the recently published Copenhagen Economics report, against the backdrop of Brexit.

The report points to the impact that strategic business routes can have on regional economic growth.

Galway anti-racism network to hold discussion next week

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Galway Anti-Racism Network will host a discussion next week, on challenging racism in all its forms.

The public event will give a platform to people who have experienced racism and will provide the general population with a toolkit on how to combat racism.

Speakers on the night will include a resident from one of the city’s direct provision centres, a member of the Travelling community, and a young Muslim person who will discuss their experiences of living in Galway.

The talk is designed to educate the audience on the general themes of anti-racism.

The event will take place in the Harbour Hotel, next Tuesday 26th November at 7pm.
