A book inspired by trees from the ground of Áras an Uachtaráin that became the raw material for students at GMIT’S Letterfrack Furniture College, has been presented to President Michael D Higgins.

See The Wood From The Trees, by GMIT lecturers Marion McGarry and Dermot O’Donovan, was published by Letterfrack company Artisan House.  The beautifully illustrated book, with poetry by Theo Dorgan, documents the story of trees that were knocked by storms in Áras an Uachtaráin and then gifted by President Higgins and his wife, Sabina, to GMIT Letterfrack to be used by students.

Around that simple but inspired gesture, See The Wood From The Trees tells the chequered history of trees in Ireland as well as the story of Áras an Uachtaráin and the plantations in its grounds. It also recounts how Letterfrack Industrial School was transformed into the prestigious GMIT furniture college.

President Michael D. Higgins wrote the book’s foreword and, last week, the authors and publishers travelled to Áras an Uachtaráin to present him with a special edition of the publication.
