Plans have been lodged by University of Galway for a new academic building and theatre on campus.

The proposed building will be located at Earl’s Island on the University Road

The two-storey building would be used as a teaching and ‘creative arts and performance’ space.

According to the plans, the proposed ‘Performance Place’ features a 420-seat theatre and a back of house space.

The application asks for ten years of planning permission, which will involve the demolition of five existing warehouse buildings

The ground floor incorporates a central atrium space, a café and multi-purpose space.

While the building also includes a sustainable transport hub with secure bicycle storage, showers and changing facilities.

The first floor will include five offices, six practice rooms, a 35-desk classroom, a multipurpose room and store rooms.

City planners are due to make a decision in June
