Patron of new Galway secondary school to be announced next month

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Department of Education says the patronage of a new secondary school planned for Galway will be revealed next month.
It follows the closing of a public consultation on the patronage process this week.

Four patrons have applied to run the new school, which will serve the city catchment area and be located either in the city or Oranmore.
These are Educate Together, Scoil Sinéad Limited, the Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board and the Bishop of Tuam, Killala & Achonry.
It’s expected the new school, which is set to cater for one thousand pupils, will open its doors in 2019.
The patronage process is being overseen by external independent advisory group the New Schools Establishment Group.

Gardaí seize suspected cocaine in Ballinasloe as part of Operation Tara

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gardaí have seized €45,000 of suspected cocaine under Operation Tara in Ballinasloe.

Gardaí attached to Ballinasloe Garda Station conducted an intelligence led operation in the Dunlo Harbour area of the town yesterday.

During the course of this operation a quantity of suspected cocaine, estimated to be worth €45,000 concealed on derelict grounds was seized.

A male in his mid-teens was arrested at the scene and detained at Ballinasloe Garda Station on Sunday.

He has since been released with a file being prepared for the Garda Youth Diversion Office.

The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels.

14 Covid patients being treated at UHG today

Galway Bay fm newsroom – 14 patients are being treated for Covid 19 at UHG today.

The hospital now has the seventh highest number of coronavirus patients nationwide.

There are four Covid patients being treated in the intensive care unit at the acute city hospital.

In the east of the county, there is just one patient being treated for the virus at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

Contractor to be appointed shortly for new footbridge at Clarin College Athenry

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A contractor is expected to be appointed shortly for a long-sought new pedestrian footbridge at Clarin College Athenry.

The matter arose at Athenry-Oranmore District level, where it was confirmed by senior engineers that “everything is ready to go”.

Tenders were issued in July and have now been assessed, with the local authority awaiting the official appointment of the successful contractor.

It’s expected once underway, the works will take around eight weeks to complete – though no provisional start date has yet been offered.

The footbridge was included in the original plans for the new school, but the works were excluded from the original contracts which led to long-running delays.
