Overcrowding at UHG described as dire by hospitals chief

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The increased pressure on the Accident and Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway has been described as ‘dire’.

Chief Operating Officer with the West/North West Hospitals Group, Tony Canavan says all resources available are being utilised.

There are 47 people awaiting admission to the hospital today from the A&E Department.

Elective procedures at UHG have been cancelled as a result and will be rescheduled.

Speaking on ‘Galway Talks’, Hospitals Chief, Tony Canavan said they’ve opened extra beds to try and tackle the overcrowding issue.

Incidents of hate crime increased in Galway last year

From Galway Bay fm newsroom- There has been a slight increase in reported incidents of hate crime in Galway.

Last year, 22 cases of hate crime and hate related incidents were reported in the county Garda Division – an increase on the 17 reported in 2021.

Half of last year’s incidents in Galway related to race.

Across the country there were 582 reported incidents of such crimes, an increase of almost a third compared to 2021.

Thousands of students expected to attend upcoming open days at Galway universities

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Thousands of students are expected to attend open days at University of Galway and Atlantic Technological University Galway this Saturday (25/03).

There are over 100 talks organised for the University of Galway’s open day from 9am to 3pm.

Student Recruitment Officer, Caroline Duggan says there will be a range of different talks:

Public info events to be held on Galway-Athlone cycleway project

From Galway Bay fm newsroom- Four public information events will be held across the county next week on the Galway-Athlone cycleway project.

People are invited to view the preferred route for the 205km stretch, which is expected to run from Ballyloughane Beach to Athlone Castle in Westmeath.

It will pass through lands adjacent to Oranmore, Renville, Clarinbridge, Kilcolgan, Kinvara, Gort, Woodford, Portumna, Meelick, Clonfert, Ballinasloe and Shannonbridge.

The info events will be hosted at the Oranmore Lodge Hotel on Tuesday March 28th, the Lady Gregory Hotel in Gort on March 29th, Portumna Community Hall on March 30th and at the Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe on March 31st.

Each session will take place from 3-8pm.
