Over 450 patients waited on trolleys at UHG this month

Galway Bay fm newsroom – UHG had one of the highest numbers of patients waiting on trolleys nationwide this month with 457 recorded.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation say HSE figures show there’s a national shortage of over 200 nurses.
It has warned that overcrowded emergency departments and staff shortages are putting patients at risk.
The union argues low pay and poor working conditions are making it hard to recruit and retain staff.

Eamon Ryan voices opposition to old rail lines in West being turned into greenways

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Transport Minister says he wants to see older rail lines in the west and south return to their original use, not turned into greenways.

Eamon Ryan says he wants to see a revived ‘Western Atlantic Rail Corridor’, spanning from Ballina in Mayo to Rosslare in Wexford.

There had been initial plans for the Claremorris to Athenry, and Waterford to Wexford lines to be turned into greenways.

Minister Ryan says the outcome of a strategic rail review will determine the future of these former tracks.

Campaigners to protest at Skerritt Roundabout this weekend over ‘lethal’ conditions

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Campaigners are set to protest at Skerritt roundabout near ATU Galway this weekend, over ‘lethal’ conditions at roundabouts across the city.

The Sunday4Safety group, who also run demonstrations in Salthill, will run a pop-up pedestrian crossing near the roundabout on Sunday at 11am.

They’re chosen Skerritt Roundabout as the location after a cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a truck last month.

But they say the extremely dangerous conditions for cyclists and pedestrians are replicated at many other roundabouts across the city.

Organiser, Gráinne Faller, told David Nevin the people of Galway – whether on foot, on a bicycle or in a car – deserve far better.

Ballinasloe student creates award winning natural hair straightener

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A 13 year old student from Ardscoil Mhuire in Ballinasloe has been recognised for creating an innovative hair straightener.

Erin Godswill’s project came second in the science category of the national competition, Teen Turn’s Scifest.

The natural product, which resembles a hair mask, aims to straighten hair without any chemical treatment.

Ard Scoil Mhuire entered 6 projects, with one also entered from Presentation College Headford.

Erin explains how she developed the hair straightening mask.
