For so long he pounded the roads around his native Oughterard before modestly setting off around the world to represent Ireland at the Mexico Olympics or set a world record time over 30 miles – now the magnificent fruits of Mick Molloy’s sporting labours are proudly displayed in the heart of his home village to inspire another generation to follow in his speedy footsteps.
The man himself – winner of 15 All-Ireland gold medals from five miles on the track all the way up to the marathon – was on hand last Friday for the formal unveiling of his incredible trophy haul, which is now going on permanent display in a massive, purpose-built, glass cabinet in the foyer of Oughterard Community Centre.
And despite the haul of medals, plaques and awards that have left the display cabinet groaning under the weight of his success, there are others that aren’t yet on show. Mick’s family are trying to track some 50 more, like his Galway and Connacht medals and indeed one of his All-Ireland golds.
But with 14 of those national titles on display – among a host of prizes that also includes a hugely-merited Galway Sports Star Award – this is a collection that reflects a career that dripped with sporting success.
