Health, Beauty and Fashion with Denise McNamara
It’s always a huge topic of discussion on Thursday afternoon on Ladies Day – what did you think of the winning outfit? I have to admit I have had some serious disagreements with the judges over the years. But I can honestly say last year’s winner, nurse Maritess McCarthy, was a standout.
Top judge Mandy Maher, who runs the modelling agency Catwalk Models, returns this year for the Connacht Hotel Ladies Day fashion contest along with the hotel group’s digital marketing manager Kieran O’Malley. Guest judge is makeup artist and Instagrammer Michelle Regazzoli-Stone.
Mandy Maher, who is always the epitome of style, reveals she loves to see something a bit quirky when picking her shortlist of candidates for the top prize, worth €10,000.
“I love something to make an outfit stand out. If you take last year’s winner, Maritess had a fab big ear cuff for her statement jewellery, it was super edgy, and also I loved the fact her blouse was hand made in her home land of the Philippines.
“It was sustainable as it was 20 years old too – how fab is that.”
This is the third year the Connacht Hospitality Group have sponsored the competition but the excitement and anticipation remains as fresh as the first time, reflects Kieran.
The panel look for a few qualities when it comes to whittling down the hundreds of stylish women.
“Firstly, originality and personal style are paramount. We want to see an outfit that stands out and reflects the individual’s unique fashion sense, I believe that last year’s winner was a perfect embodiment of this.
“Elegance and sophistication are also critical. The outfit should be polished and refined, embodying a sense of class. Attention to detail is another crucial aspect — everything from the choice of accessories to the overall coordination of the ensemble is considered.”
Sustainable fashion will also be important.
“I am looking forward to hearing stories of pre loved garments given a new lease of life for Ladies Day 24. We also value creativity in how the outfit is put together. It’s wonderful to see bold choices and innovative combinations that showcase a flair for fashion.
“The Irish Millinery scene is exceptionally strong as always so the options are certainly available. Comfort and confidence play a big role too. The way a lady carries herself in her outfit can really make or break the look.”
While trends are important, the panel greatly appreciate timelessness.
“An outfit that can stand the test of time and still look stunning years down the line is always impressive. So, in essence, we are looking for a perfect blend of originality, elegance, attention to detail, creativity, confidence, and timeless style.”
Let’s see if we can hold the judges to that long list of key attributes for the Galway Races Best Dressed Lady 2024.
