Galway band, The Opacas, will play the city’s Loft on Bridge Street next Thursday, June 6, ahead of a recording session at London’s Abbey Road studios – the famous space where The Beatles and Pink Floyd recorded groundbreaking albums.
The band members – Steve Talbot, Peter Tobin, Pat Boyle, Mark Raynor, Mike McLoughlin, and Joe Treacy – have been delighted by the positive reaction to their debut album, Carpe Diem, released last year and will play songs from that release at next Thursday’s gig in The Loft (Seven). They’ll also perform new material that will be recorded in London.
“When the band started, our goal was to play as a support act in the Big Top at the Arts Festival,” says lead singer Steve Talbot.
But that hasn’t happened yet so they have changed their ambition.
“Our new goal is to follow in the footsteps of The Beatles and do a recording session in Abbey Road.”
Drummer Mike McLoughlin expands on this plan.
“The live session we are going to do in Abbey Road will be released as an EP and you will hear our sound is developing from 1960s’ inspired vocal harmonies to a more edgier rock sound,”
Support for next Thursday’s show will be provided by female vocal trio, KaRoSal (Kara Donohoe, Róna O’Riordan and Sarah Toomey).
And the gig will feature the launch of forthcoming single, You Know Me, a collaboration between The Opacas and KaRoSal which continues The Opacas’ trend of working with local artists.
The band will also perform covers of new songs by local emerging artists Jamie Colohan and Tomás Ó Cáinte.
