One point seven million paid to turf cutters in Galway
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht have paid out 1 point 7 million euro to turf cutters in Galway under the cessation of turf cutting scheme.
729 applications have been received from Galway, and as of last Friday 93 deliveries of turf were made to homes in the county.
13 bogs including the Baroughter bog, Clonmoylan bog, Carrownagappul bog and Monivea bog are included in the scheme.
The Department also says there was a 45 percent reduction in turf cutting on 53 raised bogs across the country where turf cutting is banned.
However, spokesperson for the Turf cutters and contractors association and Roscommon South Leitrim TD Luke Ming Flanagan is disputing these figures.

Request for more time to build sports facility at Inishbofin appealed to planning board

From Galway Bay FM newsroom- The county council’s refusal of an application for more time to develop a sports facility at Inishbofin has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
The plan led by Inishbofin Development Company C-L-G to request extra time for the project was refused by the council in April.
The development at Middlequarter involves a single storey sports facility to include dressing rooms, referee room, showers and toilets.
An Bord Pleanála is due to issue a decision in September.

From Galway Bay FM newsroom- Gaelscoil Dara in Renmore has been declared the winner of START, a national science competition
It challenges primary school children aged 8 to 12 to simulate their own trial and report on their findings.
The ‘Schools Teaching Awareness of Randomised Trials’ final took place yesterday at NUI Galway
Gaelscoil Dara’s winning entry asked the question ‘do children learn better from a teacher or from each other?’

Athenry’s Agricultural Show returns for first time since 2019

From Galway Bay FM newsroom- The Athenry Agricultural Show is returning tomorrow for the first time since 2019.
As with previous years, there will be a wide range of classes in categories such as showjumping, equine, sheep and dog showing, and baking.
Many categories will hold championships, and a range of qualifiers for other shows throughout the country will also be available.
A full schedule of classes is available on the Athenry agri show website.
Assistant show secretary and PRO, Mary O’Keeffe says everyone is excited to see the return of the event.
