Carna-Caiseal/Na Piarsaigh 1-13
St. Gabriel’s 0-8
Eanna O’Reilly in Spiddal
CARNA-Caiseal/Na Piarsaigh recorded a well-deserved win over St. Gabriel’s in the County U19 C Football Final on Saturday in Spiddal. Played in challenging conditions, with strong winds prevailing throughout the game, both sides contributed to an enjoyable contest, with plenty of quality football on display.
The thirteen-a-side format certainly lent itself to a good spectacle, with the additional space used to good effect by both teams’ forward units. It was the east Galway side who began brightest, playing with the aid of the elements.
Three points from Luke Manning, Lewis Coughlan and Joe Smyth in the opening ten minutes saw St. Gabriel’s open up an early lead. Carna-Caiseal/Na Piarsaigh replied with a score from Mac Dara Ó Conaire, but the Connemara boys struggled with their shooting in the opening quarter.
Four wides from scoreable positions undermined their efforts early in the game, as the prevailing wind made it very difficult to measure long range shots. Dara Ó Cualáin narrowed the margin with a well taken free into the wind before St. Gabriel’s had a goal chance at the other end. It was Coughlan who broke through before blasting a shot which was well saved by Máirtín MacCraith.
Ó’Conaire soon equalised with his first pointed free of the afternoon. Two minutes later, St. Gabriel’s edged back in front with a score from Luke Manning, after a good team move involving Coughlan and Jamie Malone.
