Michael D Higgins and wife Sabina concerned over planned development across from Galway home

The Higgins family have all issued submissions to Galway City Council
Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina have issued concerns over a planned development across from their Galway home.
The former president and his wife returned to their Rahoon home on Circular Road after his second term ended in November last year.
Both have issued submissions to Galway City Council about the 39 residential unit plans being put forward by Kenny Developments Galway LTD.
Michael D said that although he is fully behind more homes being developed for Galway city, the “narrow country road” of Circular Road must be upgraded first before any developments go forward including a footpath and better traffic management plan.
President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina hosted their final afternoon tea at Áras an Uachtaráin this time last year before they returned back to Rahoon.
They welcomed approximately 100 members of the public, groups and organisations from around the country.
They included a group of scientists from University of Galway who earlier in the year, collaborating with astronomers in Leiden University and the University of Arizona, discovered a new planet.
Over the last 14 years President Higgins and Sabina have extended a welcome to approximately 15,000 to 20,000 members of the public at the Áras each year
This has included the themed series of summer garden parties in the Áras grounds, receptions, afternoon teas, concerts, tours and other occasions.
Galway will always be home, President of Ireland Michael D Higgins once declared after his first inauguration.
“A visit home to Galway always refreshes my mind and gladdens my heart. Galway and its people will always be in our hearts and, irrespective of where we may be, Galway will always be home,” said President Higgins back in 2013.
Meanwhile another Galway area is getting 320 new homes after their long awaited plans were given the green light by An Coimisiún Pleanála.
Kingston Stables LTD’s development on land on the Western Distributor Road will contain a mix of townhouses and apartments.
Original plans had been put in for 360 homes but there had been local objections regarding impact on infrastructure and safety.
An Coimisiún Pleanála outlined that the plans could go ahead if 40 of the proposed homes, earmarked for specific parts of the land, were scrapped.
