WITH the name Galway WFC consigned to history after a decade competing in the Women’s National League, a new club will represent the city and county this season as Galway United have taken over the reigns of keeping the local women’s game profiled at national level.

To some extent it will be a continuation of the old order, but with a new manager and coaching staff there will also be something fresh about the set up. Phil Trill and his coaching team of Adrian Cronin, Gabriel Darcy and Theresa Keane will oversee a side who will kick off their new season at Eamonn Deacy Park on Saturday against Wexford Youths (2pm).

The new Galway United line up will probably lack some of the experience it had last season, but the management have also added some fresh faces. With Shamrock Rovers added to the ten teams from last season, the talent pool is stretched further with the Dublin newcomers swooping for all the best players in the country.

For Galway United, it is a case of building on the young talent that is there already, while some new signings will add a bit of freshness to the squad. Gemma McGuinness is one of the most experienced players to sign and previously played for Sligo Rovers and in Northern Ireland. The Brady sisters – Kayla and Leah – were involved when the Academy sides were winning league and cup doubles, while Izzy Beletic has played College football in the USA. Siobhan Doolan and Amy Madden are players who saw action with Wexford and Treaty previously.
