Life will return to a derelict corner of Ballinasloe by next Christmas as regeneration works at Dunlo Hill forge ahead.
In an update to area councillors, Executive Architect Ciara McDonagh said construction works were progressing well at the site and a completion date had been set for September 2026.
The development, which takes in derelict housing and a former business unit, will deliver 16 new social housing units where there was previously seven two-storey units and two-three storey units – all of which had been vacant for years.
The new development comprises of 12 one-bed maisonettes and four two-bed apartments, with the potential to provide up to 40 bed spaces.
As well as residential space, the three-storey building that once housed Dooley’s Pub, a protected structure, is to become a community centre.
No serious issues had arisen on site to date, with demolition works “significantly complete at this stage”, Ms McDonagh said as she praised contractors Custy Construction for their work.

Cllr Dermot Connolly (SF) said it was great to see the “hive of activity” on site since works started.
“This will breathe new life into the area and provide people with a much-needed roof over their head,” he said.
Cllr Evelyn Parsons (Ind) said the transformation of Dunlo Hill would provide a great boost for that part of the town.
“It is going to be wonderful to see the lights on in that derelict corner of Ballinasloe. And, more importantly, it will provide much-needed housing,” she said.
Cllr Parsons asked if plans were in place for the operation of the community centre once works had been completed.
Ms McDonagh confirmed that a number of ‘interested parties’ had already expressed an interest in using the facility.
“We intend to open that to official expressions of interest in the second quarter of next year. They will be assessed on what will be the most suitable use for the building,” she said.
