Inside Track with John McIntyre
SALTHILL/Knocknacarra are getting a rapid return from recruiting John O’Mahony as their senior football team manager. It was a big coup for the city club to entice the former Galway boss back to the sideline, especially as they had drifted off the pace in the county championship over the past three or four years.
With the last of their three Galway titles coming in 2012 and without a final appearance since 2016, Salthill/Knocknacarra had some ground to make up at the start of the year. Even getting O’Mahony involved and also having the likes of Finian Hanley, Seán Armstrong and Norman Costello in their backroom team was no guarantee of a major upsurge in fortunes.
Still, it was a major statement of intent and despite losing out to title holders Mountbellew-Moylough in a high-quality group encounter, you could see a significant improvement in Salhill/ Knocknacarra. Mind you, they were hanging on against Tuam Stars in the quarter-finals, but Rob Finnerty’s premature departure arguably contributed to that close shave.
Having already overcome Annaghdown earlier in the championship, last Sunday’s semi-final against the same opposition was never going to be straightforward, particularly as Damien Comer and company would enjoy a motivational edge and for long tracts of the game, you couldn’t be certain about the outcome.
