Donegal 1-9
Galway 1-9
Alan Foley in Letterkenny
IT was one of those that Galway footballers should’ve won and could’ve lost.
Both Paddy Carr and Padraic Joyce gladly took the positive spin as they saw their respective Donegal and Galway sides share the spoils in Letterkenny. The draw takes Galway up to four points, while Donegal now have three from their clashes with last year’s two All-Ireland finalists having come up short against provincial rivals Tyrone and Monaghan.
A contest in which they led by five and then trailed by two having gone all of 35 minutes without scoring, Donegal got it together late on to grab a draw. Galway were the ones pressing in the second half and Paul Conroy had a chance to win it as time spilled into the sixth minute of the five signalled for injury time
The Galway midfielder was faced with a tricky free from the shadow of the Dr James McDaid stand, which had only been christened before throw-in, in an expression of gratitude to the former Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation. Conroy’s kick looked good only to tail off at the end
Galway boss Joyce wasn’t the only one who thought for a second it was over and the consensus at the end was that Conroy had given it one hell of a go.
Both teams had forward lines you wouldn’t have necessarily have predicted this time last year, although Galway reintroducing Rob Finnerty at the break helped the Tribesmen continue their forward momentum.
