THE conclusion wasn’t without confusion last Sunday in the All-Ireland minor camogie semi-final but when the full-time whistle blew, Galway’s dreams of making the decider fell two points short to Cork.
With the Tribesgirls chasing down a match saving goal, officials indicated that Galway had an extra score, questioning whether there was enough time to rescue what appeared to be a two-point deficit with two white flags.
“I thought the officials did a really good job all day long,” said Galway manager Aaron Fox afterwards. “But there was bit of confusion at the end. Was it three-point lead, a two-point lead? How much extra-time? I think that did affect us.
“Aoibheann (Barry) popped a point over at the end as was the instruction. But we weren’t actually sure where we were in terms of the time and the score. That was a bit frustrating to be honest, particularly at a pivotal point in the game.”
After a seven-point defeat to the same opponents seven days earlier, Galway’s management team pulled an extra defender back, hoping to restrict the Rebelette forwards but it was a move that didn’t yield the required results and they were 1-9 to 1-1 behind by 22 minutes.
Conditions were excellent in McDonagh Park and Galway made a bright start registering the game’s opening point inside 50 seconds as after Kayla Madden set up Barry for a shot, play was brought back for a free and the Kinvara corner forward commenced her impressive personal tally.
