If the purpose of a sportscar is to turn heads, get its top off when the sun shines and drive like a go kart and embraces the green issues, then the MG Cyberster passes with flying colours.
The MG brand from the past is synonymous with building little gems that drivers love like the MG B, Spitfire and the Roadster.
Under its new Chinese ownership, the MG brand has redefined the two-seater with a host of modern touches and technologies that make the Cyberster something special and fitting for the times that are in it.
It’s an exciting return for MG to the convertible market, celebrating the brand’s 100-year history with a cutting-edge, all-electric performance roadster.
The MG Cyberster is an all-electric roadster, with a focus on sporty performance and striking design. It features scissor doors, a fully electric hood, and a wraparound cockpit with a triple-screen display.
The car is expected to be available in Ireland with a starting price of €69,900 for the single-motor version and €75,500 for the dual-motor version.
There are two variants: the Exclusive with a single motor rear-wheel drive and the GT with a dual-motor all-wheel drive. Both these models feature a 77 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 500km on a single charge. The Cyberster’s performance is equally impressive, with the GT model accelerating from 0-100 kph in just 3.2 seconds.
My test car when I picked it up with 100% charge indicated on the dash showed that I had a 484km range available.
Travelling off the motorway so as to get the most out of the car, I covered 220km and still had 221km left in the battery at the end of my journey. That’s fairly impressive, to be fair, and would have been much less if I had taken to the motorway and hadn’t driven it well within the limits of the car.
One of the key features of the Cyberster are the scissors doors. They will take a bit of getting used to. Some will call them gull wing doors and while when opened they provide a big aperture for getting in and out, look out when it is raining because they are not so well designed and big drops of rain will land on your lap.
Otherwise the overall look is very fetching. It is sleek and low slung and catches the eye from both front and back. I do like the wide hips over the rear wheels that give the car a stylish stance and a visual movement even when it’s parked up.
Inside the Cyberster is equipped with a host of high-tech features, including an advanced cockpit with a 10.25” widescreen display. You will need to take a bit of time to study what’s available and with a wide array of touch functions.
Safety and convenience are also prioritised, with features like MG Pilot advanced driver assistance systems, heated seats, and a premium Bose audio system, making the Cyberster as practical as it is exhilarating.
If there was ever a doubt if the Chinese car makers could struggle to match the Europeans in terms of quality, technology and design then cars from the likes of BYD, Xpeng and MG are making quite a stir in the Irish motor market. The MG Cyberster is further evidence that they know what they are doing.
Of course, the Cyberster has its physical limitations and can only be aimed at the sportscar enthusiast with a liking for exciting driving. If those enthusiasts are conscious of the green issues, then the Cyberster will give them the looks, technology and, more importantly, the fun factor.
