Merlin Woods campaigners make their case against proposed bus corridor

Published

on

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Friends of Merlin Woods group says the City Council’s arguments in favour of a bus corridor through Merlin Woods do not stand up.

The group made a presentation to city councillors at a joint meeting of all four of the Galway City Council’s special policy committees in the Menlo Park Hotel.

The group is against plans for a bus corridor through Merlin Park Woods due to environmental and heritage conservation concerns.

It says the City Council’s claims that the new route would solve traffic issues, aid the development of the city and would have a negligible loss of public amenity – are all untrue.

The Friends of Merlin Woods group has made a number of suggestions- that the City Council apply for a Special Area of Conservation designation for Merlin Woods, and to consider providing traffic lights at the entrance of Merlin Park hospital instead of the proposed bus corridor.

They also want provisions put in place to restore the Merlin River.

Speaking at the meeting, group members Noel Barber and Grace Conneely-Jennane say the proposed corridor is unnecessary.
