Medical journal endorsement for NUIG research on physical fitness

Galway Bay fm newsroom – An NUI Galway research project has revealed that the secret to fitness could be in your back pocket.
An 8-week trial led by Dr Liam Glynn, a lecturer in General Practice, revealed that those using a smartphone fitness app walked over half a mile extra every day.
The study has been published today in the British Journal of General Practice.
It shows that use of an app that gives exercise feedback is associated with a meaningful clinical increase in physical activity.
Participants saw improvements in step count, blood pressure and weight during the trial.

Deputy Sean Canney confirms that The Old Grove Site in Tuam has now been handed over to the HSE

Galway East Independent TD Sean Canney has stated that the work on the construction of the Old Grove Site is now complete and that the buildings have been handed over to the HSE by the Contractor.

Deputy Canney added that the signage is now complete on The Grove Adult Mental Health Services Unit and the Grove Children’s Disability Network Team Unit is now ready for fit-out and use.

Speaking this afternoon, Deputy Canney said that this is great news for Tuam.

Draft Athenry Local Area Plan goes on public display

The Draft Athenry Local Area Plan for 2023 – 2029 is now on public display.

The LAP is a land-use plan and overall strategy for the development of Athenry, to ensure the town is developed in a sustainable manner.

Several reports have also gone on public display – including a local transport plan, and a strategic flood risk assessment.

The draft local area plan and reports can be viewed online at Galway.ie, or at County Buildings, Athenry Library, or Athenry Area Office.

The closing date for submissions is Friday, July 7th.

Aleen Cust Memorial Society wins County Galway Cathaoirleach Recognition Award

The Aleen Cust Memorial Society has won this year’s County Galway Cathaoirleach Recognition Award

The Society has brought to light the trail blazing work of Ireland’s first female vet Aleen Cust

The group was presented with the award by Cathaoirleach Moegie Maher last night in the Meadow Court Hotel in Loughrea

The cathaoirleach’s awards were held in conjunction with the chairman’s annual ball, attended by 350 people.

The other award winners are:

Arts and Culture – Glenamaddy Theatre Festival

Best Contribution to Heritage – Milltown Heritage Group

Environment and Climate Action – East Corrib Alliance

Social Inclusion – Ukrainian support group in Esker CURVE

Sports Award – Tuam Womens’ Shed
