Sarsfields 2-14
Loughgiel Shamrocks 1-14
Eanna O’Reilly at Croke Park
SATURDAY evening proved to be another glorious occasion in the history of Sarsfields Camogie Club as Hopper McGrath’s charges made history once again. The east Galway club recorded a magnificent second All-Ireland title in a row, after overcoming an enormous challenge from a gallant Loughgiel Shamrocks side.
Sarsfields were put to the pin of their collar by the Ulster champions, but once again showed their class and character to come out on the right side of a compelling final.
A third All-Ireland title in four years confirms Sarsfields’ place among the greatest club sides in the history of the competition. Sarsfields are the first club nationwide to have won back to back All-Ireland senior titles in both hurling and camogie.
In winning this All-Ireland, Sarsfields had to overcome significant adversity during the season, making this title arguably more impressive than any which preceded it. All Star forward Orlaith McGrath was unable to play any part in 2022, due to a cruciate injury, while injuries to Maria Cooney and Sarah Spellman meant neither could play a full 60 minutes in Saturday’s final.
To successfully reclaim the O’Carroll Cup in such circumstances underlines the extraordinary quality within the Bullaun/New Inn club. Sarsfields’ achievements since winning their first county senior title in 2016 have been remarkable, and there is certainly no evidence to suggest that they might slow down in the near future. Their ambition and desire for success was as strong as ever on Saturday evening when they had to dig deep to edge out a strong Loughgiel outfit.
