THE new €10 million Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge across the Corrib will be officially opened next month just as the summer tourist season clicks into full swing, the City Council has confirmed this week.
‘Finishing works’ on either side of the structure, which was put in place early last December, are expected to be completed over the next few weeks, with the tape-cutting ceremony provisionally pencilled for a May date yet to be finalised.
Head of Transport at Galway City Council, Uinsinn Finn, confirmed to the Galway City Tribune that the bridge would be officially opened next month once the last of the finishing works had been completed.
“This will be a very exciting addition to the pedestrian and cycling infrastructure of the city but it will also be a very attractive viewing area for local people, visitors to Galway and for students,” said Uinsinn Finn.
He said the ancillary ‘finishing works’ were on schedule, with the bridge to officially open at a date in May to be finalised over the coming weeks.
Uinsinn Finn said that the Newtownsmyth Road had reopened earlier this week with a new stone paved surface which would be an attractive and distinctive feature for pedestrians.
