Maree Basketball Club’s senior women’s side added a forth national title to their collection on Saturday when they swept all before them to lift the Division 1 League Cup at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
They now add the League Cup to the Division 1 league title, Southern Conference shield, and Division 1 Cup they have already won this season, and they will look to complete the clean sweep by adding the Division 1 Trophy next month.
Saturday’s competition was run in a blitz format, with the eight competing teams split into two groups of four, with games played cross-court with a running clock at the NBA.
Maree opened their account with a 66-57 win over Belfast’s Phoenix Rockets; they then defeated FabPlus North west from Donegal 53-44 in their second game; and made it three wins from three with a 56-30 success over Limerick Celtics in their final pool game.
That set-up a semi-final meeting with another Belfast side, Ulster Elks, in what was a repeat of this year’s Division 1 Cup final. Maree won that cup final 82-76, and they drove home their dominance over Elks with a 55-46 win on Saturday.
Portlaoise Panthers were 59-50 winners over Rockets in the other semi-final, meaning the top two sides in this year’s Southern Conference would meet in the final; and Maree made it three wins from three in their meetings with Panthers this year when claiming Saturday’s final on a 55-36 scoreline.
