MAREE put the disappointment of their cup exit behind them as they moved clear at the top of the Men’s Division one table last weekend with a 12-point win away to Malahide.
It was a winning weekend for all three Galway sides in the Men’s Division One, with Maigh Cuilinn impressing in a six-point victiory away to Templeogue; while Titans survived a potential shock when defeating basement side Team North West in Letterkenny.
Mystics narrowly missed out on making it a Galway clean-sweep, losing a tight game with Tolka Rovers in Dublin in their Women’s Division One clash.
MEN’S DIVISION 1
Malahide 79
Maree 91
Maree moved top of the table last weekend thanks to a fighting 12-point win over Malahide in Dublin.
The game also saw the national league debut of Alan Burke, the youngest from the famous Burke dynasty in Oranmore as he joined older brother and team captain, John, on the court; but it wasn’t all good news on the day, as Jake Morris picked up an ankle injury that could sideline him for a number of games.
Maree flew out of the blocks in the opening quarter, finding their range early to lead 30-22 at the end of the first quarter, with Isaiah Taylor knocking down 10 points on his way to a game-high 37 points; while Rinor Dragusha threw in nine in a 20-point haul.
The visitors managed to hold their hosts at arm’s length in the second-quarter to lead 52-25 at half-time, before the younger Burke stepped into the action in the third quarter for his debut as Maree stretched their legs, and the lead, winning the quarter 23-17 for a 75-62 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Maree went into the game without both Cillian Cannon and Daniel Oyeleye, and then lost Morris to injury in the final quarter, but they went score-for-score with their hosts to clinch the win.
They are back on the road this Saturday with a trip to Killarney to take on St Paul’s, before a Christmas derby with Titans in the Kingfisher Arena in University of Galway on Saturday, December 27 (3pm).
