Conamara native Cóilí Collins is responsible for some of the most memorable and significant nights of music Galway has experienced in the past few years. Performing as Shampain and facilitating other artists in his work with VSN World and G Town Records, the Rinse France resident is one of the most prodigious DJs Ireland has produced in the last decade. Key to that reputation is Cóilí’s innovation when it comes to putting on gigs, as is evidenced by his latest project.
This Halloween night, the Indreabhán native presents a unique showing of 1934 silent film Man of Aran, accompanied by a rearranged soundtrack that he will be mixing live in An Taibhdhearc.
It is an event that highlights the invention and expression currently rife in Galway’s arts scene, as well as the ties to Irish culture that are shaping the identity of the work being produced in the city today.
For Cóilí, the opportunity to play the Taibhdhearc adds further importance to the night.
“There is [a personal significance] with the Taibhdhearc,” he explains. “My Mam [Máirín Uí Choileáin] has written a few plays and a book about aisteoirí in Spidéal. She’s done an MA in Drámaíocht tríd Gaeilge; she used to be the drama teacher in Inverin and she’s won loads of awards for drama.
“We used to do a lot in the Taibhdhearc before it burned down. I was always really sickened after it burned down because I’d go there a lot when I was younger with her. In primary school, sometimes she wouldn’t have anyone to mind me, so I’d have to go and sit in the dressing room while her students had their drama class.
