A 26-year-old man has been remanded in custody in connection with an alleged assault on the Mayor of Galway last Friday.
Martin Ward, of no fixed abode, appeared before Galway District Court today.
He is charged with assaulting Neil McNeilis on September 7 last at Wolfe Tone Bridge, contrary to Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Act 1997.
He is further charged with being drunk in public and with breaching the peace by engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting words or behaviour on the same date at Wolfe Tone Bridge.
Sergeant Finbarr Philpott said he was waiting for the DPP’s directions in relation to the charges.
Judge Mary Fahy remanded Ward in custody to appear before the court again next Monday by video link from prison.
Vodafone secures permission to replace telecommunications infrastructure in Oranmore with larger structure
Galway Bay FM Newsroom – Vodafone Ireland has secured planning permission to replace a telecommunications structure on Main Street in Oranmore with a taller piece of infrastructure.
An Bord Pleanála has given the project the green light subject to six conditions.
The project led by Vodafone Ireland Limited seeks to remove an existing 15 metres telecommunications support structure and replace it with a new 24 metre unit.
County Planners refused the application in February citing concerns including that the development would be visually obtrusive, would seriously injure the amenities if the area and the value of property in the vicinity.
An Bord Pleanála has overturned the county council decision in granting permission with revised conditions.
One states the mast and all associated antennas and equipment are removed from the site when no longer required.
Protest in Galway City this afternoon in opposition to British Government legacy proposals
Galway Bay FM Newsroom – A protest will take place in Galway city this afternoon in opposition to the British Government’s legacy proposals.
The families of the Time for Truth Campaign are behind the National Day of Action against the proposed amnesty preventing prosecutions for conflict related offences.
Sinn Féin Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell will be the guest speaker at the Galway protest which takes place in Eyre Square at 2pm.
